Magic and witchcraft have been important components of almost every human culture throughout history and continue to be so in the present day both globally and in the West. These topics have attracted an enormous amount of scholarship but publications are often scattered and scholars working in one area rarely address research produced in others. These volumes bring together important representative publications spanning antiquity to the present day and setting Western developments in a global context. Significant attention has been given to the major witch hunts of early modern Europe because scholarship on early modern witchcraft has often driven the field. But other periods and regions are not neglected. Important theoretical issues are also addressed such as the conceptual relationship between magic science and religion and the role of gender in the perception and persecution of magical practices in many parts of the world. - Magia si vrajitoria au fost componente importante ale aproape oricarei culturi umane de-a lungul istoriei si continua sa fie asa in zilele noastre atat la nivel global cat si in Occident. Aceste subiecte au atras o cantitate enorma de burse dar publicatiile sunt adesea imprastiate iar oamenii de stiinta care lucreaza intr-un domeniu rareori abordeaza cercetarile produse in altele. Aceste volume reunesc importante publicatii reprezentative care acopera antichitatea pana in zilele noastre si plaseaza evolutiile occidentale intr-un context global. O atentie semnificativa a fost acordata vanatorilor majore de vrajitoare din Europa moderna timpurie deoarece studiile despre vrajitoriile moderne timpurii au condus adesea acest domeniu. Dar alte perioade si regiuni nu sunt neglijate. De asemenea sunt abordate probleme teoretice importante cum ar fi relatia conceptuala dintre magie stiinta si religie si rolul genului in perceptia si persecutia practicilor magice in multe parti ale lumii.
